*flash fic for Chuck Wendig's challenge. ACCEPTED :D*

"YO. Big Sis, what's a Gintama? You keep saying it." Two brown eyes glared up at me. Justin's only seven, but right now he's probably questioning my intelligence. Probably thinking I make up half the words I say. Really. This little demon had a damn dictionary in his worn-out backpack as if it's God's last treasure in the no-man's land.

Did ending the world make kids want to be smarter - or was I just not paying attention? A dictionary. Jeez. Oh, right, he said something. "Uh, it's an anime. Best one ever. We should see it - even you'll laugh your ass off."

"Stupid. There are no televisions or DVD players anymore. You're so old - why would you sit in front of a box to watch fictional stories?"

"This is pretty ironic coming from a kid, brat. God, you're right. My life fuck -"

"Sarah!" A little girl screeched at me from behind. I groaned. "Watch your mouth!" In true prim princess fashion, Aiko sniffed when I turned to acknowledge I heard her (Hell if I ever forget that - she hid herself in a charred up car remains in depression for two hours) as she nodded her twin-tailed blonde weapons of mass destruction. Not sure if it was dyed or not, but since it's been two months since IT happened, I guess that's her real hair color. A cute Japanese girl with blonde hair. Wonder if it was her grandmother's genes? The scientists already mutated half the population and anything natural was already rare...

I squeezed my hand on my rifle. Softly, I mumbled, "I need to find more weapons...mad people would kill for natural specimen..."

"SARAH!"

"Huh?" I looked down at two little bodies who suddenly got in front of me. When did - ? Oh, damn. Not again.

Aiko frowned, her nose scrunching like she tasted something bad, "You're doing it again. You're my knight! I can't have you getting your head in the clouds."

Justin laughed, "Yeah! Ms. Knight. Ha! That makes me your King - Aiko's some lady's maid. How am I supposed to save the world if you can't focus on finding me books? Stupid, manly Sarah."

Aiko slapped a handkerchief at Justin's arm. Already it left a bruise. She found in the ruins of a tea shop two days back. She enhanced it with nanotechnology so it almost seemed alive - and impossible to tear. "Justin! Sarah is not manly, she's my Prince Charming. You better respect her! And I am a PRINCESS."

"Ow..." Justin's lips trembled as he weakly held the arm she whipped at - a bruise was already forming. One hit from the cloth and it messes with your skin. Like, bruises or if you tried to rob her...it could cause your skin to burn. And spread. Until you combusted.

"Oh shut up, you faker."

Justin just rolled his eyes, and snapped his fingers. The bruise faded. He may not have super destructive inventions, but he could control his body at will. Today he had black hair and freckles. Yesterday, he decided to be red so he could 'vanquish his enemies while they trembled at his demonic mane of fire.' Unlike Sarah whose body was all natural, Justin was raised in a test tube. Sarah just happened to be a child genius as well as the last full human on earth. Supposedly.

These kids...

Even after two months of walking, I still have no idea how I got this job. Watch over two kids. Simple. Except the world ended and now I just happened to have to lead two children with Monster-level abilities to a secret lab in an underground society without the use of any technology not crafted from Sarah and at no faster a pace than 4 miles per hour. And even bikes weren't allowed.

Life sucked. I guess I could be dead, screaming under a building covered in acid spit (fuck you scientists who wanted to re-create Godzilla), but damn. If I had a family, I'd rather be holed up in a sanctuary instead of risking my life even more than I had to.

I was a soldier. Fine. Reserves, but only cause I had a job working with my father on uncovering fossils. Okay, fine, he was a lunatic who spent the family fortune treasure-hunting. And gambling. I just picked up a few skills to keep myself alive. Like how to get out of a nest of snakes or what to do when facing a cannibalistic cult. That sort of thing.

But I took up the babysitting job for one day in order to ditch my old man. One. Day. And I was set up by their parents - those four bastards. They had a "vision" - who believes those anymore? If this vision is a drug-induced nightmare, I'm gutting their asses out.

Aiko and Justin proceeded to give each other the silent treatment by the time I focused on them again. I keep having these mental rants. Comes from having no entertainment and thrust in a Dark Age kind of world maybe?

Suddenly I shoved the kids to the ground as a giant snake rumbled out of the dirt. Like a ferrari was shoved down it's throat - which is believable. The monsters these days weren't chibi-sized. Quickly, I grabbed my gun and shot at it's vital points, the chip in my eye already doing it's job.

3 vital points detected. Eye, hollow in throat, and one of two hearts found.

[45.7 degrees on right side of body center. Commence action.]

My limbs straightened before relaxing into fighting mode. Slivers of silver gleamed on my arm as little tendrils fed into my veins and I felt a tiny sting before my senses enhanced. Now I can chop his head off in one leap if I wanted to...but there were three more bodies underground in the next 15 meter radius.

No matter. My pain sensors were reduced by 40%. Anymore and I'd have forgotten how to feel human.

I snarled as I leaped, "Let the battle commence."

Behind, the two kids stood silently, watching. Like little dolls who knew something you didn't. They knew what they were here for. Not to fight even with their super abilities. Not even to cheer me on.

The little girl in her pink dress and the boy with the polo shirt and patched up backpack were here to observe. To save the world by supporting and leading the chosen one.

Apparently, that person was going to have to sacrifice her heart to the scientists because a certain genetic code could cause humanity to evolve even more...and re-create this apocalyptic world of Godzillas and half-dead people.

And as much as I love the kids (so far) and I think they wouldn't want me hurt, they are also my grim reapers.

The Ultimate Sacrifice. The Hero.

And that someone was me.

With a final slash, I decided I would tear off the snake's head - just as two more sprung from the ground.

I landed on the black dirt of this ruined earth with a THUD. A small crater formed.

"Okay, bitches. Bring it on!"

-another day in the apocalypse. Days until my Murder - er, Sacrifice: 128.

Like hell I'm going to give up the world to live. But I'm not going to die either.

"Okay, Dad. Looks like your daughter's going to have to place another bet. Maybe we'll meet up? Heh."

I tossed my gun in the air as I leaped - two hands turned pure silver.

God, Monsters, Humans. Who cares what's real or fake.

I'm going to be the last one standing!
Starting a new account! Let's get drawing :)
